W is for the Whispers of Those Who Have Gone Before Us
Our USA is fairly young compared to the rest of the world, so when we travel I often feel like we can heaer the whispers of those who have gone before us. I know we can hear those whispers in our own country. One example is when we were at Pearl Harbor, I felt like I could hear those who had been serving at the time.

We were in Hawaii in May or June of 1987. |
The first time I went to Israel, it was almost too overwhelming. I couldn't take it all in. The second, third, and fourth times I definitely heard the whispers - of Mary and Joseph and the child, Jesus on the temple steps. Some of the places you visit, they "think" things happened there. They know these stones were there and that Mary and Joseph and Jesus walked there. I could hear Mary as she possibly said something like, "Jesus, don't get too dirty. Stop running." In my mind, I could hear Mary and Jospeh's laughter as they watched Jesus.
When we were in Egypt, I could hear whispers from Moses.
When we were in various places in Turkey, I could hear the whispers of Paul.
When we were in Greece, I could hear the whispers of those who lived so long ago and who went about living their daily lives shopping and talking and doing business
What about you? Have you traveled to a place where you could hear the whispers from the past? The whispers of those who have gone before us?
I often hear the whispers of my ancestors as I do my research.
ReplyDeleteI imagine you do!!

ReplyDeleteLove this post! There have been many places where I have heard those whispers, often involving places where my ancestors lived,
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother was Irish and I didn't think to include this in my post, but when we visited Ireland . . .I did feel like I heard whispers there, too.
DeleteIt really is staggering to think about the age of things when you travel. You've been to some interesting places. Hope you're having a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteHope y'all are having great weather on the lake this weekend!
DeleteI don't hear whispers, but when I put my hands on an ancient wall or walk an ancient pathway, I do get goosebumps thinking of others who touched the same place and walked there. It is humbling. There was love and laughter, and pain and heartache, and growth, and faith...
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed weekend and week ahead!
Love your topic, reminds me of the goosebumps I, as a passionate family historian, feel when visiting cemeteries, memorials and ancestral towns around the world. I'm looking forward to my next holiday when I'm visiting the historic Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely mind blowing to feel the layers of history in ancient civilisations. Here from the A-Z all the best for the end days of the challenge.
ReplyDeleteMine was in Colorado. We had recently moved to Colorado Springs and were taking a back route northwest to ski. As we came to the crest of the mountain range, the plains were spread out in front of us. I could see and hear the sounds of Native Americans and buffalo as though there were actually there. Gave me chills...

I wouldn’t call it whispers but I do feel a deep connection with ancestral places when I visit. There have been a couple of times when I’ve felt they wanted me to make me feel welcome.
