Wednesday Hodgepodge

From this Side of the Pond

I missed answering the Hodgepodge questions over the past couple of weeks. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond writes the questions and we answer and then connect back at her blog. Feel free to answer in the comments or copy and paste questions to your blog and link up!

1. What's something you would say 'runs in your family'? I think I could easily answer that lots of bad habits run in our family! I'm sort of joking. My family tends to be loud . . .the more excited we are, the louder we are. We also tend to have weight issues. I would also like to think that the gift of hospitality runs in my little immediate family - Mark and I have that gift and I think our kids have that gift, too.

2. A book, song, tv show, or movie you love that is centered around family. Mark and I loved Modern Family and watched it every week. Right now, we are watching Blindspot and the FBI team refers to themselves as family even though they aren't actually related.

3. Family matters, family ties, family tree, family man, family fortune, black sheep of the family, family values, one big happy family...choose a 'family phrase' that applies to your life currently and explain.  I guess it would be family matters. My sweet mother-in-law needs overnight assistance right now and the adult children are taking turns spending the night. Mark spent his night with her last week and then took my night. I'm still working 40 hours a week plus facilitating two groups a week and I really appreciate that he took my night.

4. Last thing you fixed for a big family dinner? If you're not the cook, last thing you were served at a big family dinner? We feed our young professional group on Tuesday nights and we sit around the table like a family so I'm going with this week's menu. I made Crack Chicken and Rice by Plain Chicken, green beans, salad, and rolls. A friend made pies for our dessert.

5. What are three words you would use to describe your family. Loud, funny, Christians -- that is for my immediate family - Mark and I and are two kids (spouses, grandkids). Actually, our son-in-law is more of an introvert and I think we are probably way too loud for his taste :-) but he puts up with us.

6. Insert your own random thought here. Our neighborhood had a block party on Saturday afternoon/evening. It was much needed. The first few years we lived here, there were tons of neighborhood functions but covid did a number on everyone. It was so good to be out and about (actually outside) with lots of people.

we had live music to the left of the jumpy house

War Eagle!

I thought this was funny -
a whole row of parked
golf carts

It had rained right in the middle of the afternoon portion of the party and we thought they might cancel but it kept going! Only one food truck stuck it out through the rain . . .and the sno cone truck stuck it out, too. One neighbor owns a real estate company and she and her husband donated a ton of door prizes. I won a $50 Fandango gift card and our neighbor won either $50 or $100 Outback card.

  1. What a great outing and your neighborhood seems to have the perfect place for such a gathering. So sorry about your mother-in-law and hope this is only a temporary set back.

  5. What a great party! And golly, I'm sitting here gaining weight just reading about your delicious dinner. Given the escalating prices of beef and pork, I'm off to Google crack chicken.
    Meanwhile, WAR EAGLE!

  6. The neighborhood I grew up in had block parties and they were some of the most fun events of my childhood. Looks like a great time! Is Plain Chicken the name of a cook book? Cooking site? Am I reading that wrong? I'm all about a good chicken recipe that feeds a crowd.

  7. With Covid it is a rather closed society here these days. For conversation, gather outside by the fence, have a chair and join in the conversation. Otherwise, it is still masks everywhere. Good to hear you were able to join in a safe gathering. Congrats on your prize winning.

    1. Back in the spring of 2020 when everything in Alabama was closed down, we sat on our front porch and our neighbors sat on their front porch, and a third couple sat in their golf cart and pulled up to the curb . . .and we had happy hour! We are back to masks here. The numbers are horrible in Alabama.

  10. Great answers...I noticed a lot of people said loud, including myself. I always tell my husband (he's not loud), that if we were lost in the forest I'd be the one you'd want with you because my voice would carry. Ha!

  11. I do know that my daughter and I are both very loud! Hope your Mother in law is doing better. Is that a long or short term need? Your meal sounds yummy. Wow, a block party!! I'm surprised.

    1. Things had been much better in Alabama and people were starting to actually do things together. It was outside and spread way apart. Of course, now the numbers are HORRIBLE in Alabama and our vaccination rate is very low. I'm afraid it might be a long term need with my mother-in-law. I think my husband and his siblings will have to make some decisions at some point.

  12. Just made crack chicken soup!! So good. Will try this chicken and rice recipe. I am sure we will love it.
Fun picture of the golf carts. My daughter has fond memories of riding around Cancun in a golf cart with her husband. Have never been on one myself.
We loved the TV series Parenthood. Have tried to get into A Million Little Things and This is Us but not crazy about either. We just started The Morning Show. It is not family oriented but has been pretty good. Minus the language.
