Hodgepodge

I'm joining up with Joyce and the gang for the Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. What is your favorite room in your house and why?
This is a hard question to answer. There are several spaces in our home that I love. When we were looking for a new house back in 2014, one of my non-negotiables was a large dining room. I wanted an actual dining room though many houses were being built without one. When we found this house, I loved that it had a full size dining room. We host the Young Professionals every Tuesday night plus we are in a supper club of ten plus we often host our family Sunday lunch at our house so a dining room makes sense for us.

I think there were either 14 or 16 around the
table on this night! Have I told y'all how
much I love the song, "Crowded Table"?
You can listen here.

2. What's something that will instantly annoy you?
Let me start by saying that I am too easily annoyed lately. I am working on it. Things that annoy me quickly are when I realize someone isn't listening to me or when I've asked someone to do something and shown them how I like it done and they refuse to do it correctly (can you tell I like to be in control?) or when someone continuously mispronounces names or when someone makes mouth noises like smacking???? Grrrr! I'm working on it. I promise.

3. May 28th is National Hamburger Day . . .will you celebrate? How do you like yours? If you're not cooking at home is there a favorite place you like to go for a burger? Did you ever work in a fast food restaurant?
I love a good burger but I don't know if I will celebrate on the actual day. We had smash tortilla burgers on Friday night. That is Mark's newest favorite way I make a burger. I like my burger to be done. I do not want any touch of rareness in a hamburger. I love it with cheese, mustard, ketchup, pickles, lettuce, tomato or I love a good pimento cheese burger. There are several places in town that are known for their burgers - Chez Fon Fon is one and Jack Brown's is another. I have not ever worked in a restaurant at all - full service or fast food.

4. What are three scents you like?
I have so many allergies that I can't abide perfumes nor very many scented items. Essential Peppermint Oil and I are friends! I can usually tolerate real lemon scent. Most scented candles send my allergies into overdrive but I can tolerate the apple/cinammon candle for a short amount of time. People who don't have allergies don't usually understand this scent aversion thing. If someone comes into my office with perfume or cologne or even scented laundry detergent on their person . . .it is not good for me. There are other "smells" that I enjoy - popcorn popping, fresh coffee (even though I don't drink it), brown sugar brownies baking in the oven (even though I don't eat them).

5. What do you miss most about being a kid?
Looking back, I guess I miss that carefree feeling. Growing up, our "job" was to go to school and do well. I did that easily. I had friends. I had sisters and parents and grandparents. We went to church. In the spring, summer, and fall we played outside. In hindsight, I realize that my parents had worries but they did such a good job of not letting those worries affect us. We always had food on the table and clean clothes. My daddy did tell my sister, who was an adult, that he wore underwear with holes so that we might have things when we were growing up.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
We didn't do anything special on Memorial Day, but we did eat lunch together after church on Sunday. Mark's brother, George, cooked a brisket, baked sweet potatoes, and cooked corn on the cob. I provided a big bowl of fresh fruit. Mark's sister made green beans cooked with Conecuh Sausage. My sister-in-law set the table with a red and white "picnic" cloth and she used "flag" napkins. We sat around and talked for a while so it was a nice time together. My daddy was a World War II Veteran but he didn't give his life for our country. I don't know anyone personally who died in a war. I remember a young man in our home church was declared MIA in Vietnam. I think they did finally receive news that he died in Vietnam, but I was quite a few years younger and the Vietnam war seemed like something far far away. I am thankful for those who gave their lives for our freedom.

  1. I think we were shielded from the cares of this world as children, and because there was very little news, very little TV in fact, and especially no Internet it was easy to be protected. I miss that too. I think we have the same dining table. I love ours too and a dining room was a non-negotiable for me. We have a crowd here often and I love everyone around the table. I put a big table in the outside space too and we've enjoyed that already. Have a great day!

    1. We bought the dining room furniture and one of our bedroom suites back when we were newlyweds. Mark's mother kept saying to me, "buy classic pieces of good furniture," because they will last forever. We've been married 41 years and I think the dining room furniture is about 40 years old. Is it American Drew? I think it is. I agree with the fact there was very little news - we didn't know immediately that something horrible was happening across the world, down the street, or around town.

  2. I enjoyed reading your answers and agree with everything you said! A dining room was a non negotiable room for us as well. Many newer homes are doing away with them (ours is not really newer at twenty years but I think the trend was starting then and has continued). I am also annoyed too easily :). Your lunch on Sunday after church sounds really nice!

    1. Several of our neighbors basically have a "dining" table in their living space. The space was made for a table but it is all in one space. Our space is very open but the dining room is it's own room. It opens to the entry hall and the walk through bar area which connects with the kitchen and family room.

  3. I love the reasoning behind wanting a designated dining room and you have used it so well. It is inspiring. Being free to stuff more bodies around it is great. Squeeze them in and they will have a great time! Your Sunday lunch sounded just right. I enjoyed reading your answers. Enjoy the last four days of May!!

  4. Your dining room is stunning! I am a sucker for windows!

I am with you on the not doing something correctly thing. I was brought up in a strict household with a mom who had high demands. She expected perfection, and I tried my best to attain that. I’ve carried those expectations with me into adulthood - a good and bad thing sometimes because I’m often intolerant of others’ sloppy work. I can give grace but it usually follows effort expended. Have a great day!

    1. I sometimes wish I hadn't been so intolerant of other's work. My boss always says "err on the side of grace." I wish I had learned that many years ago.

  5. Your dad's underwear with holes reminded me about my dad saying his favorite piece of fried chicken was the back... so we kids could have the legs and thighs. We believed him then and know better now. Bless our parents who sacrificed for us. I enjoyed my visit here!! xo

  6. That's a shame about your allergies. It must be difficult at times. I love the size of your dining room.

    1. Thank you!! Yes, it can be very difficult especially if someone doesn't understand how scents can make me sick.

  7. Life is so different for children today. I am sure my parent had worries/concerns, but I never knew. Today, children know about the worries and concerns because parents tell them. The children are burdened from an early age.

    1. Yes, life is very different from when I was growing up. I'm sure there are lots of similarities when you get down to the basics of parenting and being a family, but lots of things are definitely different!

  8. Hi, I enjoyed your answer about the dining room, very special.
I laughed about your dad and the underwear.. but I do know how true that is. My parents also did without for us girls.
I also appreciated your random thought. Prayers for our military families.

  9. Your dining room looks like a fantastic space!
Those things annoy me so much too!
That is a shame about your allergies, I do love a scented candle.
Life was good when the only responsibility we had was to go to school and do well.
It sounds like you had a lovely memorial day.

    1. I'm glad to know I'm not alone in the annoyance department!! I wish I could use scented candles and wear perfume. Someone came down the hall at work today with heavy perfume and it instantly gives me a headache and makes my head clog up!

  10. Your Hodgepodge reflections are both heartfelt and relatable. I especially love how your dining room is more than just a space — it’s a place of connection, community, and joy.

The way you cherish that “crowded table” moment is beautiful. Your honesty about little annoyances and allergies is refreshing, and your love for burgers made me smile (pimento cheese burger sounds amazing!). Your memory about childhood is touching — your dad’s quiet sacrifice really hit home. And your Memorial Day gathering sounds like a sweet tribute to both family and country. Thank you for sharing your story — it truly warmed my heart.

  12. I do know how to cook a smash burger but I am curious about a smash tortilla burger.
I have eaten at Fon Fon but not at Jack Brown's. I love pretty much anything from a Stitt restaurant, but seriously wish Highlands were open.

    1. For the tortilla smash burger, you take a tortilla (I use lower carb ones) and you press the raw hamburger down as thinly as possible onto the tortilla. I season with whatever I'm feeling like that day and I usually add a few finely chopped onions to the meat. We don't have the new fancy griddle so I use an electric skillet. I place the burger/tortilla meat side down in the skillet. After a few minutes, you flip the tortilla/burger to meat side up and place a slice of cheese on top and put the lid on the skillet (or cover on the griddle) for about 3 or 4 minutes. Take it out of the skillet and add burger toppings and eat like a taco. We usually put lettuce and pickles and mustard and ketchup and I like some tomato on mine. It is the fastest burger ever. You can literally have two ready to go in less than 10 minutes. Sometimes I mix up one of the basic "sauces" - like mustard, ketchup, mayo, pickle relish. You could probably even put Thousand Island on it.

  13. I’m often annoyed too these days. It’s been a little bit better lately but it can hit very fast and suddenly at times!
I don’t like any red in my burger either! And I love it grilled!
I also have horrible issues with scent! Scents that would not bother others are horrible for me. I get headaches and feel sick to my stomach. One of those scents is anything that is fake green apple.
I use a peppermint/eucalyptus oil to help when I have a cough from my allergies. I don’t know that I love it but it certainly helps with that and opening a stuffy nose.
I can totally relate to what you miss about being a kid. My parents never really talked about how tough things were either. I just enjoyed being a kid and having fun. I really miss that.

    1. I've never tried peppermint oil for a cough. I dab it on my temples if I have a sinus headache and it helps!
How true - we just "enjoyed" being kids and having fun!
