U is for Unforgettable

#AtoZChallenge 2025 letter U

U is for Unforgettable

I had been struggling with U . . .and then I realized that I should write about an unforgettable experience. This happened during the summer of 2022 on our trip to Italy, Austria, and Germany. Our tour guide/tour company was able to secure tickets for us to have a seat in the Papal Audience held in St. Peter's square. It was a very hot day and we aren't Catholic BUT you could feel how important this event was. I was at lunch with friends (on the day the Pope died) and I made the statement that we had actually heard the Pope speak in St. Peter's square and one friends was amazed. To be honest, I thought it was a cool experience but until the Pope died this week, I don't think I realized how important that day really was.

There were folks from Latin America sitting all around us and they called out, "papa! papa!" They loved the Pope and wanted to hear his words and they felt loved by the Pope. It was obvious. If I close my eyes and put myself back in that place, I can almost hear their voices as they called out.

It was truly an unforgettable experience and I am so glad we saw and heard him.

Pope Francis - Papa Francisco

There were guards everywhere - later
we read a sign that said not to take
photos of them.

We don't look too terribly hot in this photo.

There were a lot of people and the entire group
in front of us chanted Papa.

I wanted to get in this fountain!

What is an unforgettable experience you have had when you were traveling?

  2. I loved our trip to Italy and we did tour the Vatican but did not get to see the Pope. The entire trip was unforgettable for me and for Joe. His folks came from Italy and that was his first trip to visit his roots. You picked a perfect word for "U"!!

  4. That was a memorable experience for you. Good question too. I remember in New York we tried to get tickets to a show on Broadway. All we could get was directors chairs (behind glass) at Night of the Iguana. Just as the show was starting we were led to the front row as two people had cancelled. There was Richard Chamberlain, sweat on his brow, giving a great performance. Memorable!
