Museum of Antiquities

#AtoZChallenge 2025 letter M

M is for The Museum of Antiquities in Egypt.
When I was a child, I devoured library books at an unbelievable rate. Those books took me on far away adventures. I wanted to be an archeologist and discover amazing things.
Screech . . .
I am not an archeologist but I still love old things that archeologists and others find.
Another bucket item for me was the visit the Museum of Antiquities in Egypt.
First of all, just let me tell you that it was not air conditioned. Now that we have that out of the way, let me tell you how wonderful it is!

This is a quote from Trip Advisor:

This famous museum houses the world’s largest collection of ancient Egyption artifacts (more than 120,000 items on display) featuring the famous Tutankhamun collection with its beautiful gold death mask and sarcophagus and the royal Mummy room, which houses an additional eleven Pharaonic dignitaries.

We went to the Old Museum and like two days later . . .I think the new one opened. I am guessing it has air conditioning!

As I said, this is the Old Museum of Antiquities.

Just FYI - this is what the new museum looks like -- see the pyramids in the design? That is clever!
We didn't go there. I found this picture online.

When we first entered, I was amazed. Everywhere I looked . . .there was something fascinating to see!

I LOVE to wear flip flops of all kinds . . .so did they!

It was a once in a lifetime experience for me. I did read that some of the exhibits are too old and/or too fragile to move so they have remained in the old museum and that improvements are being made. I would assume they are adding air conditioning because how in the world do they keep these artifacts safe when it is so hot inside??

Do you enjoy museums? What is the oldest artifact you have ever seen?

  1. I would enjoy this too (minus the no a.c.). The British Museum in London has a great Egyptian collection we enjoyed visiting from time to time. I like museums in small chunks so I remember what I'm seeing. Have a great day! We're halfway there!!

    1. I agree about museums in "small chunks." I have the hardest time absorbing so much information at once. Yay for halfway!!

  2. You have had some amazing travels. This museum does look amazing but I don't know how long I would have lasted without air conditioning. We have been to a few museums in the United Kingdom. The British Library has a treasures room with lots of great old stuff.

    1. It was so hot in there! The only exhibit that had air conditioning was the King Tut room. I wanted to stay in that cool room!

  3. I think I went the the old museum in about 2002/3. There are loads of things in there I really loved. Although I’d seen the Tutankhamun exhibition in London, even longer ago, so that impressed me less. I heard that the museum had been damaged during the revolution of 2010(ish) but it seems to be all back much as it looked before. The new one is…interesting. I must check it out online. Thanks for the virtual trip!

  5. I do enjoy visiting museums. That one in Egypt looks amazing. Some of my favorite museums have been those odd little out of the way small town museums filled with obscurities of local history. Some years back we went to one of the big L.A. museums to see the touring exhibit of the Red Sea Scrolls. That was pretty cool though the stuff at the La Brea Tar Pits Museum is probably much older.

  6. It's years since we went to Egypt, I'd love to visit that new Museum and cruise down the Nile again.
