Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. What's one piece of advice you would you give a recent or soon-to-be graduate?

As soon as your new employer allows you to do so, sign up for whatever savings plan they offer -- if they match your contributions, sign up for the maximum you can give! Also, if you move away from your friends and family, find a small group - look up the churches around your new home and see if they offer a group for young adults. Travel as much as you can afford!! Enjoy life, but don't allow yourself to get into credit card debt.

2. May 15th marks the birth date of L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. At this point in time are you more in need of brains, courage, heart, or a trip back home? Explain.

Let's see . . .I guess brains?? Being back in college at my age requires lots of thought! Also, I have some big projects coming up at work in August so I will need to plan carefully which also requires lots of thought!

3.  "There's no place like home" is an oft repeated line from Baum's book. When was the last time you felt the truth of that statement?

When my sister and I are together, location doesn't matter. It feels like "home." Also, we have a close knit group of friends and no matter where we are, when we are together it feels like "home." Last but not least, when I went to my 50th high school reunion last month, being around those people I knew for the first 18 years of my life felt oddly "at home-ish" though I have NO DESIRE to move back to that side of town.

4. May is National BBQ Month...do you own a grill? Who does the grilling at your house? What's your favorite thing to throw on the grill? What's the last thing you grilled?

We own a Phoenix grill and a Pit Barrel smoker. Mark is the grillmaster at our house. Burgers are always good on the grill and we had those for Mother's day lunch! Most any meat is good after cooking on the grill or smoker.

5. What's a memory you replay in your head when you need a little joy?

It is not a specific memory, but when I need to calm down or need a little joy, I often close my eyes and imagine I am on the beach in Orange Beach, AL. I can hear the waves and feel the sun and smell the salty air.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Mark and his siblings are closing on their mother's house today. It is bittersweet. The house needs to be sold yet there are 60 years of Mark and George's memories in that house. She died in June of 2024 so it is time for some closure.

  1. I hope the closing goes well today. It does sound bittersweet. Sixty years of memories is a lot! Great advice on question one. Enjoy life but not going into credit card debt is a good one. Finding a small group is a good idea as well. Community is so important and finding it at a young age could impact a young person for life.

    1. Thanks so much for visiting and commenting! My sister-in-law is really struggling with the sale of their mother's house. She is very sad. Mark has very mixed emotions about it.

  3. I like your advice to the recent graduate. I have a grandson graduating next month. He is very frugal so I don't worry about debt with him. I hope he finds a job in this area.

  4. I like your advice to the graduate. I'm sure the home sale is bittersweet. I know how we all felt when my mom's house sold. It was our house too and hard to part with. Memories are sweet though. Hope all goes well!

  5. Good financial advice! I wish I had started my 457 plan sooner but also it's never too late.
We closed on my mom's house in November and it was hard. It wasn't the house we grew up in or that would have been harder. I they took photos or found photos of the house and maybe you could do a gift of a painting of it or something sentimental?

  8. Good answers and better well-thought than mine, I think. Closing on the family home is never easy. The memories live on inside us, though!! Hope it goes smoothly for them. xo

  10. Oh I am sure selling that family home comes with special/unique challenges. Hope all goes smoothly. Thankfully, the memories stay even when the house is gone. (But I understand the emotions...) And a 50 year reunion - wow! That is cool:)

  11. Great advice to the new graduates! My late father was a huge proponent of travel; he longed to see the world ... and darn near made it!

  12. I'm sure that is not an easy process of selling a home you grew up in with all the memories. I enjoyed your answers. I couldn't imagine doing college now as an adult. Sheesh!

  13. 1. Piece of advice to a graduate: you can be whatever you want to be.
    2. May 15th is the birthday of my mom. She passed 33 years ago. I miss her so.
    3. "There's no place like home." I last really felt it when my ship returned from overseas in (dear Lord), April, 1998.
    4. I own a propane grill. Loving me some steaks. I grill, but my wife is much better than I.
    5. A thought which gives me joy: a tie between the births of my grandchildren.
    6. Random thought: cottage cheese IS cheese. It didn't have to be a PROFOUND random thought, did it?

  14. Wonderful advice for grads, and so practical! One of my sons graduated at 16 and started working full time and it didn't occur to his employer that he wasn't even eligible for the retirement savings until he was 18yo! But he did start saving on that birthday, and was able to use that money to help buy his first house, and I think he should be in great shape when he reaches retirement, just because he started socking away that money early.
Hope the closing on the house went smoothly, and that you're having a great week!
