E is for Early Morning Quiet

#AtoZChallenge 2026 letter E

April A to Z Challenge - Today is the letter "E" and my topic is "Things that Make Life Better."
E is for Early Morning Quiet.

I am an early riser. My alarm goes off at 5:02 a.m. Why :02 you might ask? It sounds better than 5:00 a.m. haha! Some mornings, I wake at 4:30 and go ahead and get up . . .because if I go back to sleep for just a few minutes, it makes me grumpy. Yes, I know some of you will say getting up early makes you grumpy. I just don't require as much sleep as many people do. I will admit that I'm yawning as I type this!!

What do I do with that early morning quiet . . .I first drink a Diet Pepsi (remember on day one of this challenge, I shared with y'all about my Diet Pepsi addiction). I often have a little snack - not breakfast - just a cracker or something.

I check my email. Sometimes I blog. Sometimes I do homework. Sometimes I work on my Sunday School lesson for the coming week. Sometimes I put food in the crockpot for dinner later in the day. Sometimes I do laundry. Sometimes I empty the dishwasher. Sometimes I read the Bible and sometimes I pray! By 6:00 a.m. I am on my stationary bike pedaling away and reading a book. I try to be back downstairs and hopping in the shower by 6:45 ish. Afterwards, I dry my hair and put on a little make-up. I don't wear a lot of make-up to work. I get dressed and pack my lunch which I have prepared either on Sunday afternoon or the night before. I head out the door by 8:00 a.m. and am at my desk in my office by 8:30 a.m.

I don't go into the office on Friday mornings or Saturday mornings, so I often allow myself to sleep until 6:00 or 6:30. My problem is that I feel like I've wasted a huge chunk of day if I allow myself to sleep late! I work on Sundays . . .so my alarm goes off at 5:02 and I start all over again.

I'm sure this is way more information than any of you wanted to read BUT the deal is . . . my day goes so much better if I have that early morning quiet. Mark is still in the bed and there is very little noise in our neighborhood at that time of the morning.

Enquiring (or is it Inquiring?) minds want to know . . . what time do you wake up every day? Are you an early morning person or a late night person? How many hours do you sleep per night? Do you like a little quiet time early in the morning?

  1. I’m a super early bird. I’m usually fully awake by 5:30am, no alarms. I go to bed around 10:30pm. It’s rare I sleep through however, so my total sleep time is 5-6 hours on a good night…

  2. I like the early morning quiet. I wake up between 6 and 7 most mornings. I often take a nap later and go to bed around 10.

  3. I have always been a morning person. Growing up, with 6 people and one bathroom, as a teen, I got up an hour before my dad so I could have the bathroom! Most of my life, I was up at 5:00. Now that I am retired, sleeping in until 7:00 or 7:30 is a luxury (on Sundays, church is at 10:30). Since I began walking with my neighbor friends, I am up at 6:45 Mon-Sat. I go to bed between 9 and 10. It is always quiet here, now that I am a widow. The morning news goes on after my walk and a shower. Life is good. God is good! xo

  4. Well, I'm a bit of an insomniac, so my sleep is disrupted most nights, it seems. I do prefer the early morning quiet, though. Usually I have my lights out by 11 pm. Then I might wake up about 2 or 2:30. Sometimes I will read on my Kindle, sometimes I will listen to an audiobook till I fall back to sleep. I like to be up by 6, but sometimes it's closer to 7.

  5. Jamie (jannghi.blogspot.com): I tend to get up between four and five AM, with my alarm set at 4. Today was a rare day of getting up at 6.

  6. I wrote about this very thing for my letter A - AWAKE. I really like getting up earlier but hate to set an alarm that will also wake up PC. So, a friend suggested I ask God to wake me up to do my quiet time and devotional. And He has been!!
You have so many things you are able to accomplish in that 90 minutes before you start thinking about getting ready for work. I feel the same way. In that quiet time, I can be so productive.

  7. I’m not usually up very early but I do enjoy having some peace and quiet when I’m the first one up. I tend to go to bed late and probably average 6 hours sleep a night
